Preserving our maritime heritage

WMS is keen to preserve our remarkable maritime heritage. As part of our commitment to this, we are proud to sponsor the Classic Boat Museum. The CBM was founded by Maurice Wilmot in 1992 in order to house his growing collection of classic boats. The museum
continues to restore and preserve many notable traditional craft, which are all on display in Newport, Isle of Wight. The boats are maintained in working condition and take part in regattas throughout Europe, achieving many accolades.

With the further support of the local council and the South East England Development Agency, the Classic Boat Gallery was established in East Cowes during 2007. The gallery houses many paintings and photographs from our maritime history as well as a broad selection of artefacts, including a display of the Gipsy Moth IV, in which Sir Francis Chichester achieved his famous solo circumnavigation. Additionally, memorabilia has been kindly donated by Dame Ellen MacArthur’s Offshore Challenges.

The museum would welcome visits from our friends in the marine industry and accompanied visits can be arranged
